Cypher Environmental: Making mining connections at PDAC

The mining industry is an economic powerhouse for Canada. More than 50 per cent of the world’s public mining companies are Canadian, and the sector employs more than 400,000 people in Canada. It’s no surprise then that Canada is also home to one of the largest mining shows in the world, the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention.

This year’s convention, which runs from March 1st to March 4th at the Toronto Convention Center, has an expected attendance of more than 30,000 people, from 130 countries, and more than 1,000 exhibitors.

With a convention this size, there are many opportunities to meet new clients and business partners, but with so many companies attending, it can be hard to make the right connections. To help ensure Canadian small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) attending the convention can meet the right international players, Export Development Canada (EDC) will be hosting a match-making session on March 2nd and 3rd in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export (CAMESE).

“For a small business interested in expanding to new markets, an event like this is a great opportunity to meet with key foreign buyers and demonstrate their expertise,” said Johane Séguin, EDC Sector Vice-President for Extractive and Resources. “The mining industry is so prevalent in Canada that a show like this can bring in exhibitors with a huge variety of specialization.”

Cypher Environmental

Cypher Environmental has attended the convention for three years and will be present as an exhibitor for the first time this year. The Manitoba-based company offers a unique and environmentally friendly solution to a chronic mining industry problem … dust.

“Mining is all about productivity,’ says Todd Burns, President of Cypher Environmental Ltd. “Too much dust is not only a safety issue, but it can have a severe impact on a mine’s output,” says Burns. “If machinery gets congested with dust, or trucks need to take a road one at a time to maintain visibility, it can really slow down your production. Our products prevent that.”

Cypher Environmental’s dust control and soil stabilizing solutions ‘Dust Stop’ and ‘EarthZyme’ are unique because they offer a non-corrosive, benign solution to managing dust in open mining pits and on roads. “Many soil stabilizers will be detrimental to the environment or corrosive to machinery. Our products offer a solution which can maintain the lifetime of machinery and is slowly biodegradable and non-toxic,” says Burns.

The dust created from a mining site can also have a significant impact on neighboring communities and the surrounding environment. “We’ve seen a lot of increased interest in our products from companies that are focused on CSR and environmentally friendly solutions” says Burns.

Cypher Environmental currently operates in more than 20 countries and is looking at expanding further into new markets with prominent mining industries. Cypher has attended match-making sessions during the last two PDAC conventions which resulted in them meeting new partners and distributors.

“PDAC is a great opportunity for Canadian players,” said Burns, President. “Which is why EDC match-making sessions have been so valuable to us,” says Burns. “There are only so many people you can meet at a conference of this size, but targeted meetings mean a much higher chance of reaching new clients.”

“EDC has really helped us to break into some new markets and has been a great asset in our company growth,” he adds.

“This year we’ve see an increased focus from the mining companies on finding suppliers that provide environmentally friendly solutions,” says Andrea Gaunt, EDC Sector Advisor for Mining. “This type of expertise is what mining companies around the world are looking for right now, so it’s a great opportunity for Canadian mining suppliers that specialize in these areas.”

For every match-making event, EDC’s team looks at the needs of a particular foreign mining company, and then invites Canadian companies with expertise that matches well with the foreign company’s supply chain needs and future capital expenditures.
