Q. Our family business harvests, bottles and sells Canadian maple syrup and would like to expand to overseas markets like Australia. Where can I find out about labelling and export regulations for this product?

A. Great question. Australian consumer laws are very robust, particularly around product liability and labelling. They have stringent quarantine laws and this is very relevant to exporters of food products.

Check out our First Five calls for exporters to Australia to find the local trade commissioner, and on the ground contacts for your export.

Keep in mind there may be different regulations if you want your product to be certified as organic. The regulations are not necessarily the same as they are in Canada. To find out more, contact the Canadian Organic Trade Association. The will be able to give you some insight on certification, and regulations into Australia.
